Why I Hate An Ear Infection

Posted on April 3, 2009 by Janean

Anyone who has experienced the privilege and the fear of bringing a new baby home from the hospital knows what a mixture of emotions you experience as a new parent with the responsibility and joys of having a new addition to your family. Only new parents know what it is truly like to have a lack of sleep and what it feels like to know that you were directly responsible for bringing a new life into the world. There is no greater joy in all of life than having a new baby, and yet there is perhaps nothing that is scarier as well. One of the things I hate the most about having an infant in the house is the inevitable ear infections that come with it. I have brought five children home from the hospital in the past ten years, and I have also been around when many friends and my sisters have brought their new babies home to stay. We have all experienced the unmatched joy of adding a new life into the family, but we have also experienced the fears and the frustrations that come when our precious babies get sick and we aren t sure what to do about it. My first experience with an ear infection came just a month after my oldest daughter was born. I wasn t sure that she...

Local Or Organic? A False Choice

Posted on December 24, 2008 by Pierre

A couple of years ago, I visited an organic vegetable farm in southeast Minnesota, not far from the Mississippi River. Nestled in a valley that sloped down from rolling pasture and cropland sat Featherstone Fruits and Vegetables, a 40-acre farm. Featherstone was part of a local food web in the upper Midwest, selling at a farmers market, through a CSA community supported agriculture and to co-op stores in the Twin Cities. But the partners, Jack Hedin and Rhys Williams, who began in 1995, were having a tough time economically and realized they would have to boost sales if they were to become viable. The farm earned about 22,000 a year -- split between the two partners -- so they had to take on debt to keep going; this, after a 60 to 70 hour work week. Hedin told me he made some calls and eventually landed a deal with Whole Foods to supply the natural foods chain with organic heirloom tomatoes. When I visited, they were in year two of the contract, picking the tomatoes before their peak ripeness, then shipping them to Chicago for stores in the Midwest. The deal had become the biggest sales channel for their farm; while still local, they were not as local as when...

William Walters Lowering-Cholesterol-Facts Friday, 9:45 am Today we are going to talk about the importance of Lowering your Cholesterol to prevent the 1 killer in the US Heart Disease Cholesterol is an important element required by the human body for its day to day survival. But if present in excess amounts, it can be counterproductive as well. Medical science has shown that excess quantities of cholesterol in the blood can lead to the blockage of blood vessels, leading to heart attack or stroke. Hence it is important that one may check the cholesterol buildup in his her body. If left unchecked, it can lead to a complete disaster. The chemical composition of cholesterol is such that it is insoluble in water. As a result, it cannot dissolve in blood and hence independently move around in the blood stream. They are carried by certain chemicals known as lipoproteins to the different tissues of the body, to be stored, used, or excreted, as it may be required. But in excess amounts, some of these lipoproteins may settle on the inside of the blood vessels forming plaques, thus blocking the blood flow in the process, and eventually leading to a cardiac arrest, when...

An Overview Of Tattoo Removal Techniques

Posted on August 29, 2008 by Krystina

After coming to the decision that you want to remove your tattoo you have to decide how you plan to do it. There are a few different ways for you to choose from and you have to figure out which way is right for you. One of the most common techniques to remove a tattoo is by using a laser. The laser will help break up the ink that is imbedded in your skin so that it can be absorbed by your body. It can take a few treatments to fully get the tattoo to disappear and even then you can be left with a scar. Another method uses a substance known as glycolic acid to help remove the tattoo. This acid, unlike the laser, is used to help bring the ink to the surface of the skin. After the ink has reached the surface it can be removed without leaving as big of a scar as the laser treatment. Both of these methods can be expensive and can cause scarring to the tissue in and around where your tattoo was. These methods can also cost a good bit of money depending on the size of your tattoo. This last method isn t the actual removal of your tattoo but a cover up of your old one. Some tattoo artists are able to transform your old tattoo into something different depending on what...
